Machine Learning for Population Genetics Workshop
Location: University of Tübingen, MVL6
Date: 29.01.2025
Organizers: Daniel Schrider, Franz Baumdicker, Yuxin Ning, Klara Burger
About the Workshop
Join us for a 1-day workshop at the University of Tübingen focused on the intersection of machine learning and population genetics. This workshop is designed for PhD students, postdocs, and enthusiastic students seeking insights and looking to gain practical skills in applying machine learning techniques to population genetic research.
What You’ll Learn
The workshop will begin with two introductory sessions tailored to bridge knowledge gaps:
- Introduction to Machine Learning for Biologists: An overview of machine learning fundamentals and their relevance to biological research.
- Introduction to Population Genetic Data for Machine Learners: A primer on population genetic concepts and data types.
Following the introductions, participants will engage in three hands-on sessions:
- Simulation-Based Neural Posterior Estimation of Ancestral Population Sizes
- Detecting Selective Sweeps with CNNs
- Hierarchical Ancestral Population Structure Inference
Share Your Work: Flash Talks
Participants will have the opportunity to present a 2-minute flash talk during the workshop.
These short presentations are a great way to:
- Share a past or ongoing project.
- Discuss an idea for a future project.
- Highlight research challenges or goals, whether or not they involve deep learning.
Flash talks are optional but strongly encouraged to foster collaboration and exchange of ideas. If you’re interested, you can indicate this when signing up.
Who Should Attend
- PhD students and postdocs specializing in population genetics, computational biology, or machine learning.
- Advanced students eager to expand their knowledge and skill set in these interdisciplinary fields.
Spaces are limited, and registration will be prioritized based on the order of sign-ups.
